Cinema is alive and well! We recently visited many sites across Berlin and London to expand our horizons on how film exhibition is being practiced today.
From crowdfunded genre houses to grand restored landmarks, independent cinemas everywhere share more than seats and a big screen; every single venue is clear-eyed in their role as a community hub, bringing people together and creating space for connection.
In conversation with the British Film Institute, the BFI Film Audience Network, the Independent Cinema Office, the International Confederation of Arthouse Cinemas and many more partners, we discovered an inspiring emphasis on audience, inclusivity and accessibility across all levels of the film value chain.
Canada is far behind on valuing these crucial venues. We must support today’s independent cinemas, and create real opportunities for the cinemas of tomorrow.
