Celebrating 10 years of National Canadian Film Day

Taking place on April 19, 2023, the 10th edition of National Canadian Film Day was a massive, coast-to-coast-to-coast salute to Canadian cinema!

National Canadian Film Day 2023 saw 1,500 screenings and 57 special guests. Independent cinemas took part with a variety of free value-added screenings for their communities.

This year, 66 independent cinemas participated in National Canadian Film Day, holding 81 events. This year, 28 cinemas were first-time participants! The most popular titles amongst the indie cinema crowd were Buffy Sainte-Marie: Carry It On and Strange Brew.

Partnership with Reel Canada

NICE is delighted to have once again partnered with National Canadian Film Day organizers Reel Canada to support free screenings of Canadian films in independent cinemas across the country.

This year, our collaboration with Reel Canada was enhanced with a funding commitment from Telefilm to support participating NICE members. This is welcome support for cinemas who are gladly committing showtimes to free Canadian film programming. We thank Telefilm for their support.

NICE and Reel Canada also collaborated on a fun ‘Top 10 Canadian Films You Have to See on the Big Screen’ for participating venues to select from.

A little something extra

And hey—it’s a national day celebrating our national cinema, so why not have some fun with it?
